Alexis Zurita

Where are you from?

I am from the center of the planet, from the navel of the world. I am from Quito, Ecuador, South America.

Before being a photographer, tell us what you wanted to be?

I wanted to be a drummer in a rock band. But, I was not born with the gift of  music. Instead, I studied graphic design. I dreamed of illustrating comics and creating a fantasy world full of monsters, ghosts and superheroes.

Tell me about the moment you decided to become a photographer?

My first contact with a camera was for university projects, in 2004. With my partner, who is now my wife, we visited Otavalo, an ancestral city of indigenous people. The objective was to make an editorial project. She made the texts and I made the graphic part. Little by little, I was fusing design with photography. I never imagined I would became a wedding photographer one day.

What was the best advise you received when you started your photographer carrier?

There are two tips that marked a before and after in my photography.

-Daniel Aguilar: “Composing is ordering. Clean your backgrounds”.

-Fer Juaristi: “Do not be a professional photographer, be a personal photographer. Follow your instinct, respect your personal tastes and that will be reflected in your work. You will find couples who like what you do. It’s ok not to be liked by everyone. “

Can you define photography?

Write, play, experiment, have fun and rock with light.

For you, what makes a good photographer?

The most important thing is to be honest, honest with ourselves and with our clients. Be clear with them, that they know what you are passionate about and what to expect from your work.

For you, what makes a good photograph?

Write, play, experiment, have fun and rock with light.

What is your biggest challenge today?

To exceed my expectations, to continue supporting my family with a camera and, of course, to be the father and husband that my family deserves.

Tell us about the day you felt most proud about your work?

Two weeks ago, I was in my office editing a wedding. My 7 year old daughter came in and said: “Oh dad, what a nice picture”. I asked her: “Why do you think it’s a nice picture?”
She replied: “Because it’s different. It is original”. That was the most glorious moment of my photographic career. I felt chills. I thought: “This is how photographers who win” important “prizes should feel when they are recognized all over the world”. When I hugged my daughter, I felt like the number 1 in the world.

Tell us about the relationship you have with other photographers? How important you feel that is.

Sharing is always important. I have many friends from other countries.  I am always in contact to exchange experience. I ask them about their jobs. I try to comment their publications, because the support between us is fundamental.
In my city I have a strong friendship with my colleague Juan Pablo Velasco. When we can, we cover weddings together and we have a great time. We learn many things from each other. Sometimes, when you tell your wife about 35mm, openings, compositions, flash or natural light you look extraterrestrial. If you still do not have a photographer friend, find one soon and do not bore the family.

Can you tell us an advise - photography or business tip - that somehow made your career evolve at any point?

Never think of yourself as a superstar photographer. Always keep both of your foot go with your foot on the ground. You are not at a wedding just to cover your creative needs or win prizes. You are there to deliver memories of beautiful days. If they ask you to take the group photos, do it. If they ask you for pictures by tables, do it. Remember that you are at a wedding.
